Today some very special visitors arrived at George Street Normal School. Eight students, their principal, teacher and tour guide made an adventurous journey from Japan. Our ten visitors are from our sister school, Gifu Shotoku Gakuen. They are spending a three day visit at our school hosted by Model 1A and Model 1B. During their time at George Street Normal School, the Gifu students will be involved in the normal classroom programme as well as experiencing lots of fun learning activities in and around Dunedin. Today we warmly welcomed our visitors with a special assembly and an important document was signed to ensure that our international friendship continues into the future.

I am interested in polar bears and how they hunt when there is not enough food for them to survive. I found out that polar bears wait for a seal to come to a breathing hole. Then with speed like lightning, they grab the seal. They have excellent camouflage for their environment and a very keen sense of smell. They can smell a seal through a metre of ice (roughly) and prey up to 20 miles away. They have very long sharp claws to grasp their prey, and strong jaws to rip, bite and hold their prey. They are also massive animals.

MY CAT This is my cat Rufus. He is crazy but I love him. When he sees a dog he says "Ohhh ohhh oohh no!" He has chased a big dog away and other things. By Matthew

This is my second favorite toy, the trampoline. I like it so much because you can bounce so high on it. I can do flips and I'm trying to bounce higher then my sister, Kaiya. Most of the time me and Kaiya go on the trampoline we play with each other and when we are finished we are laughing so hard we can't stop.

Every classroom has two senior students who are their 'Learning Detectives'. Room 11 are lucky to have Ben and Jedi this year. The Learning Detectives come and share information with the younger students and gather their ideas to contribute to school ideas and activities.
